SOM Prize for Architecture, Design and Urban Design

Viktor Ramos has been selected as the Recipient of the prestigious 2009 SOM Prize, a $50,000 research and travel fellowship. The SOM Prize will enable Mr. Ramos, who just completed his Master of Architecture degree at Rice University, to travel to a selection of mega-cities throughout the world, in carrying out his research topic, “Solutions for a Small Planet: Exploring the Hyper-Dense.” Mr. Ramos, an Albuquerque, New Mexico native, earned his undergraduate degree at the University of New Mexico. |

In addition to the SOM Prize, the SOM Foundation also awards a $20,000 travel fellowship. In 2009, this fellowship was awarded to Parsa Khalili. Mr. Khalili, who received his M. Arch from Yale this spring, plans to carry out the research on his topic, “In Search of an Iranian Modernism,” through extensive travel in Iran, with particular interest in the work of 20th century Iranian architect, Seyhoon Houshang. Mr. Khalili, who hails from Naperville, Illinois, earned a Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree in 2006 from the University of Illinois at Champaign. |

Structural Engineering Fellowship

Abby Enscoe, a master's degree candidate in structural engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, has been selected as the SOM Foundation's 2009 Structural Engineering Fellow. The jury recognized Ms. Enscoe for a thorough travel plan that focuses on Japanese architecture and "designs that arrange efficient structural systems into simple, purposeful spaces that impact us deeply." Enscoe studied physics as an undergraduate at Harvard and worked as a carpenter with Habitat for Humanity for two years.
