In an attempt to say something about the SOM traveling fellowship I found myself turning back to the travel journal made during my sojourns around the Mediterranean. I think this entry from Greece does the best job of conveying some semblance of my journey, and, at least partially, of what I brought home and continue to carry with me:

From a letter dated 30 June 1993, Paros
When one travels to see our world- the art and architecture and landscapes- things get thrown up against other things and a surreal quality takes over and says, “Today you are in Greece (white, blue sea), yesterday you were with Gaudi in Barcelona.” Memories collide and argue with each other. The serene, quiet, yet powerful interior of the sanctuary at La Tourette does somersaults when the Postman Cheval goes inside, an event made possible through the wonders of travel and a little imagination. When disparate notions meet and combine, and fight and make love, life occurs. Life with a certain richness and depth of experience, with a certain joie de vivre.
